Chapter 15

Inherited Legacy

Kate stood staring at a small, white washed cottage house in a field on the out skirts of a town. Two children were playing in the front yard while a middle aged man sat slumped over smoking a wooden pipe. The children seemed to be playing an assortment of games ranging from tag, to hide-n-go-seek. They were laughing and giggling with each other as they enjoyed the warm spring day.
One of the two children was a skinny scruffy looking boy who seemed to be missing one of his front teeth. The other was a girl with long brown hair that shimmered red in the sunlight.
As the two ran around the house chasing each other, the man stayed silent and still. He himself looked scruffy and was dark skinned. He looked as if he had spent most of his life out doors in the sun.
“Now be careful you two and don’t hurt yourselves. We don’t need any accidents.” He warned as he stayed in his seat by the front door.
The two children merely carried on their game of tag, and continued to tap each other on the back. Kate edged away from the scene. She had recognized this day. As the children continued playing, the tapping began to get a little rougher and became more competitive. Soon the two of them disappeared behind the house. The next thing that was heard was a heart wrenching wail from behind the house.
The dark man jumped to his feet and ran around the house; Kate followed, though she knew what they would discover. There in the dirt sat the little girl, clutching her knee, dark red liquid pouring from a deep gash between her fingers.
“What happened?” asked the man roughly to the boy who was standing beside the girl.
“I had just got tagged and while chasing Kate I pushed too hard and she tripped and fell on that rock!” the boy said as his pointed accusingly at a rock not too far from where they were.
The man glared at the boy for a moment then turned his attention back to the young Kate. “Kate you’re going to have to move your hands so I can see your cut…” the man said gently.
The young Kate shook her head violently as she cradled her knee even more.
“Come on Kate let me see it.” The man ordered as he started to peel Kate’s hands away from her knee.
Having finally removed Kate’s hands from her knee, the man was shocked to discover that the gashed had already started to heal. What used to be one long deep gash was now just a thin scratch.
Eyes narrowing slightly, the man turned his gaze towards the silver necklace around Kate’s neck. It was the one her father had given her before leaving.
“Jake, go get a wet cloth so we can clean some of this blood away…”
“Yes sir…” Jake nodded as he raced into the back door of the house.
“Michael….why does my knee not hurt any more?” Kate asked as she looked up into the dark mans eyes.
Michael took his gaze away from Kate’s necklace and turned his attention to the thin scrape on her knee.
“It’s because your body has started to try and make you feel better… ah, thank you Jake.”
As Michael started to clean up the dry blood on the young Kate’s leg, Kate stared onto the scene and wondered what Michael was holding back. He never did explain things well, but there was something here that he was avoiding.
Suddenly the scenery started to go all black, and a new scene appeared. This time, Kate and Jake were a few years older, possibly around the age of ten or so, and they were sitting on their favorite cliff watching the sun set.
“Hey Kate, can I ask you a question?” Jake asked as he turned his attention towards the humming Kate.
“You just did didn’t you?” she smiled as she continued to stare out towards the ocean.
“No, that’s not what I wanted to ask….” Jake pouted.
Kate laughed.
“Ok, what do you want to ask me?”
“Well….why do you wear that necklace all the time? I mean you never take it off, not when we’re sparring, or when we’re working, or swimming; so come on, what’s so special about it?”
“You really want to know?” Kate asked as her facial expression grew more serious.
Jake nodded his head vigorously.
“Well, this was the last thing my father gave to me. He said it belonged to my mother. I never met her, and well I feel a strong connection with her when I wear it. My father used to tell me of all the great things my mother used to do; and I just have this feeling that this necklace is super special. Almost like it has some hidden dark secrets that may one day make me leave this place and do great things that my mother did.”
Jake sat there in awe for a few seconds.
“Hey do you think we can go on those adventures together?” he asked.
“Sure why not? I mean, of course…once you can actually winning spars with the sword….against me and not the dummies…” Kate laughed as she pounced up quickly from her spot and started running towards a house some ways off.
“Hey that’s not funny! I’ve beaten you once!”
“Only when I let you!” Kate smiled as she waved cheekily at Jake halfway to the house.
Jake gaped at her for a second, and then he two jumped up and started running after Kate.
The last memory to play was when Kate was learning to merge with Dinni. Kate stood and watched as Sarah explained what was supposed to happen, and then the three of them deciding on what Kate should use as a power source.
“It was very ironic how you decided to use your necklace as a medium…” said a soft voice from within Kate’s mind.
“Who’s there?” asked Kate as she looked around. All she could see was the memory playing. That was strange….I thought I heard someone…
“Do not worry Guardian. I am not going to harm you…” said the voice as a knight riding a strange creature came out of what seemed to be nothing.
“Again…I ask who are you?” Kate said as she tried to unsheathe her sword, only to find that not only was it not on her hip, but that she had no weapon whatsoever.
“You don’t recognize me?” asked the voice sweetly. It appeared that the knight was who was talking to Kate.
Kate shook her head. The knight, apart from sitting on what seemed to be some kind of dinosaur, was clad in silver and carried a long slim lance. Kate did not remember meeting any old knights, or any knights for that matter.
“It is I; Twilight…” said the knight as it took off its helmet to reveal Twilight looking as if she was almost human.
“Twilight? But how can you be…bigger?” Kate wondered as she placed her hands close together then spread them apart as to simulate something getting bigger.
“Surprised? Well I can’t blame you. I and my sister are the only ones who can appear in this kind of form. We are known as the Twilight Lancers; we are the Guardians of the gate to the inner world.” Twilight explained. “But that is not why I have come here. Kate, I must ask you…where do you keep the Sky Crystal?”
Kate looked up into Twilights eyes. How would she know where the crystal was? Wasn’t that why she had stayed with Suan; to find this crystal and save the world from utter darkness?
Twilight sighed and then dismounted. Kate was surprised to see that she was a head taller than her.
“Kate have you ever wondered why you could heal so fast? That you felt so close to your mother? That you could just pick things up so easily? If you didn’t have the crystal, then you would take it like any other school child who was beginning to learn. You’ve had the crystal all along…”
“But how? It’s not possible…my mother hid the crystal when…”
“Yes, she hid the crystal…but where would be a more trustworthy place? She knew if she put it any where else, that someone would eventually find it….not many people know this, but Acquiesce was that last person to see you mother. Your mother died on the steps of the Inner World. And she knew that she was going to die, so she prepared. Acquiesce was with her, so she handed to crystal to her and told her to go to her companion Michael...Michael then delivered it to your father, who then handed it down to you.”
“My father gave it to me? When?”
Twilight smiled.
“Eight years ago, before he departed for the war. He gave it to you in the shelter of a dark ally. Michael was the only other being there…but he did give you the crystal…and you never took it off since.”
The memory played silently in front of Kate. Tears started to well in her eyes. The necklace, it was the only thing that she kept on her person the whole time. For some reason when she held it, she always did feel close to her mother. Maybe that was because it was her mother’s final gift. It was the only gift her mother could give the world. The second guardian to help finish what she started.
“Kate, our times is limited. At this moment Suan is fighting Neil at Crest Island. He will need your help soon. Twyla and I were only good to hold off the dark power that Neil received. You must hurry and destroy him before he gets too much out of hand…”
Kate’s heart seemed to drop into her stomach. Stupid men….
“Thank you Twilight…you’ve helped understand what my father said to me in the cell. But what I don’t understand is how, Michael or Caroline, or Suan didn’t tell me. Cause I suspect that they knew.”
“You are right about your suspicions, they did know. But I believe they did not get a chance to tell you….our time is up…I must leave...”
“I can’t thank you enough Twilight,” smiled Kate as Twilight remounted her steed, placed her helmet back on and disappeared into the depths of Kate’s conscientiousness.

Suan breathed heavily as he pressed his back onto the cold stone wall. He never knew Neil was capable of such power. Not only was it extremely over his league, but it defiantly seemed unnatural.
Closing his eyes, Suan hugged his sheathed sword to his chest. He had had to find a place to hide; just for a little while, while he caught his breathe. It’s no wonder Sarah left when she could. He himself didn’t know how he was going to kill Neil.
This concept was still hard to grasp. Through the years, Neil had become one of his best friends. Trustworthy, honest, and very dependable; it pained Suan to have to fight him now.
“Suan you are too weak to keep me…I shall go and get your sister…” commented Shade with in Suan’s mind.
“That sounds like a good idea…” Suan grimaced as he let go of the magic tension within his body. Now free of the inner burden, Suan felt calmer and his thoughts seemed clearer. The only downside was that he was not camouflage with the darkness.
Turning his body slightly, Suan tried to peer around the sloped corner he was in. He wasn’t sure where he was, except that he was under a stair case, but from blocking Neil and trying to find a good place to rest, Suan never really received a chance to study his surroundings.
“Aw Suan, are you tired already? Or are you just trying to bide time till your death?” asked Neil.
Suan stayed perfectly still. Not daring to breathe, or give any sign of where he was. The sound of Neil’s shoes clicking on the marble floor echoed through the many chambers of the fortress.
Neil chuckled to himself when he heard no reply.
“That’s ok, you don’t have to answer back; I perfectly understand why your not talking to me. A betrayer, as some people call it, an oath breaker.” Neil laughed as he walked around the room, making the footsteps sound a bit confusing. “And you’re probably wondering why I’m doing this, am I right? Well, when I was two, my family was ordered to be arrested. My parents and my sister where taken, I, fortunately, was out in the forest so I escaped. But what’s interesting is that it was your Royal family that had asked for the arrest…this my friend is my revenge, for depriving me of a family.”
“I don’t have a family either if you haven’t noticed. Lord Turnik saw to that…” commented Suan from his hiding place.
“Oh yes, I heard about the attack on Scarlet. It was recorded in history as one of the most destructive attacks ever. And you do know that that scheme had failed? By a certain person’s mother?” Neil asked.
His footsteps seemed to be nearing closer and closer towards Suan.
“Madeline Matthews, wife of Jacob Matthews, and mother of Kate Matthews. She was the reason Turnik did not get the Sky Crystal. She defended it till death, yet the joke was on Turnik, for she did not have it. Now why was that Suan? Why did Madeline not have the crystal? Perhaps….she gave an early present to Kate…and I know you know where it is….” Neil threatened.
“Now how are you positive that I know?” Suan retaliated.
“Because every time the subject came up, you would always slither out of talking about it….so Suan…where is it?” Neil asked again as he appeared from behind a corner and pointed his sword towards Suan’s throat.

Upon waking up, Kate had to try and lift her head several times. This was due to the fact that every time she tried to pull herself off the bed, a sudden blood rush would cause her wrists to hurt and her eye sight to turn dark. Many attempts later though, Kate finally was able to slide off the bed and look around.
The room she found herself in was probably the courtliest room she had ever been in. The ceiling was high, with wooden beams, the paintings and rugs on the floor were all brightly colored, and the windows presented nothing but high gothic elegance.
After she was done studying, the marvelous things around her, Kate headed towards the door and stepped out into the hallway. It was nothing like she expected it to be. In all the stories she had heard about palaces, suggested that they all were heavily guarded and there were always many knights, or guards standing every few feet down the corridor.
Turning right, Kate wondered down a hall till she came to the only room that was guarded. The doors were large and built from the strongest wood. She could hear voices coming from the inside.
Slowly passing the guards, Kate approached the large doors. But before she got near enough to knock, the door suddenly swung open.
“Kate!” shouted Sarah as she flung her arms around Kate’s neck.
Kate had to take several steps backward in order to stay balanced.
“I’m so glad your okay!” Sarah smiled as she pushed Kate away till she was arms length.
“I’m glad too. I’m sorry if I worried you guys…” Kate smiled slightly as she tried to recover from the gut wrenching bear hug. “Sarah I know this is a very sweet moment and all, but I really need to talk to Caroline.”
“Well, but before you go in….I should let you know Suan’s…”
“Not here; I know that already. And it’s funny that you mention him because he’s the reason I need to talk to Caroline.” Kate explained as she removed Sarah’s hand and walked into the Grand Hall.
The Grand Hall was crafted from black and white marble, which reflected the dim light beautifully. As far as Kate could tell, there was not a single scratch on the floor or walls. As Kate got nearer to the throne, she noticed that Caroline was not alone. She was conversing with what looked like one of the Generals and a Prime Minister.
“Thank you gentlemen I will see you once dawn breaks…oh Kate, you’re awake,” Caroline smiled as she noticed Kate at the foot of the throne.
“Yes, I’m fine thanks to your brother….Caroline I must ask to return to Crest Island.” Kate said bluntly. There was no reason to hide what she wanted.
“Kate I understand that with Suan’s decision to stay behind will cause worry; but it was his decision. He will find a way back, it may be unusual, but he will come back; pirates are abnormally tuff like that.” Caroline laughed.
“I know your highness, but I must return. Suan will not defeat the darkness that has taken control over Neil. If I don’t return we will loose not only him, but this world will dramatically change.” Kate said pleadingly.
“And how do you expect to defeat this evil Kate? With Sarah and her spirits as allies; the few powers that you can control? This darkness will be stronger than what you have. Suan on the other hand has had much experience with dealing with strong and dark beings.” Caroline argued.
Before Kate could retaliate, something flew into the Grand Hall with blinding speed, landing abruptly in front of Caroline.
“Caroline, Suan needs some help. It seems that Neil has become too much for him to handle…” Shade hissed as he regained control of himself.
Kate slightly smiled as she internally thanked Twilight again.
“I plan on killing this evil with the only thing that is it weak against; the powers that I inherited from my mother; the Tri-Aura.” Kate smiled.
“But Kate, you don’t even know where these powers are do you? Until then you can not take your place as the Guardian.”
“That’s where you’re wrong Caroline. I’ve realized, from the many hints I’ve received, where the crystal has been all along. But now’s really not the time to be trying to explain this. First we must go and help your brother.” Kate said sternly not lifting her gaze from Caroline’s.
As the two stayed petrified to one another’s gaze, Kate felt like she was getting searched. Caroline was obviously trying to detect any lies in her words. Kate remembered reading something about mind touch. It was a very rare ability, and only few knew how to do it properly.
Caroline sighed as she closed her eyes then turned to face the window.
“You are right Guardian; we must save my brother. I will prepare some militants for you and supplies. I will also have armor delivered to you.”
“Thank you Caroline,” smiled Kate as she beamed with the satisfaction of knowing she was finally able to carry on her mother’s legacy.
Well this was the final Chapter that I had to edit. I'm currently writing 16; so if there is actually any one reading this....HOPEFULLY it should be up soon. I'm almost finished with it. School can be very boring and classes sometimes get off subject....thus why I write. My imagination needs an outlet.

Well I hope you enjoy this chapter, it does leave you kinda just standing there wondering whats going to happen, but 16 is on it's way!! *dur dur dur!*
